Main Wall

  • Definition: This refers to any exterior wall of a building or structure. It includes all structural components that are essential for supporting the roof over an area that is fully or partially enclosed.

Note for R Zone and RD Zone (where lot coverage is not a factor):

Decks, Platforms, and Amenities Regulations:

  1. R Zone:
    • According to rule 10.5.40.50(1), if you have an existing platform (like a deck) that was legally enclosed following the old City of Toronto By-law 438-86, the sides of this platform are not considered main walls.
  2. RD Zone:
    • Similar to the R Zone, if your property is in an RD Zone and lot coverage is not an issue, rule 10.5.40.50(1) applies. This means that if your platform was legally enclosed according to the old City of Toronto By-law 438-86, the sides of this platform are not considered main walls.

Note for All Residential Zones (R, RD, RS, RT, RM):

Decks, Platforms, and Amenities Regulations:

  1. General Rule (10.5.40.50):
    • For any residential zone, the sides of a platform (like a deck, porch, balcony, or similar structure) attached to or within 0.3 meters of a building are considered part of the platform and not the main walls of the building.
